From zero to knitting the coolest beanie ever
False starts
My winter uniform is colorful, fluffy sweaters paired with denim. I often purchase my sweaters second-hand because I care about quality. It allows me to find nice brands at a price I can afford, interesting designs, and better types of wool. Paradoxically, despite loving knits, I never seriously considered knitting something myself until recently.
I have asked my mother to show me how to knit on a couple of occasions in the past, but it didn’t go anywhere, because after the demo, I would not continue on my own.
The bias I had
DIY was trendy at a previous company I worked for a long time ago. During lunch break, most women in the open space would gather around a table, eat their homemade lunch together, and then spend 30 minutes chatting and knitting. I didn’t join. I thought knitting was a useless hobby, for old maids, a pretext to chit chat (which I don’t love), and I thought the output was often disappointing given the amount of effort that had been put into it. So I would instead eat at our canteen with the men.
I now raise a mental red flag whenever I discard something because it is typically feminine. This is so sexist and judgmental. I wish I had been…
